A stage adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster movie Minority Report will open at the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London in Spring 2024.
Philip K. Dick’s 1950’s sci-fi novel The Minority Report – that was turned into a hit movie by Steven Spielberg – is getting a brand new stage adaptation, coming to the Lyric Hammersmith theatre in London in 2024.
A thrilling whodunnit, the show has been adapted for the stage by the same team that created the Oliver Award-winning stage production of Life of Pi, with direction by Max Webster (Macbeth) and co-produced by Simon Friend (The Crown Jewels), with the Birmingham Rep and Nottingham Playhouse.
The play has been adapted by writer and actor David Haig. The Production Designer is Jon Bausor; Video Designer Tal Rosner; Lighting Designer Jessica Hung Han Yun; Composer and Sound Designer Nicola T. Chang; Movement Director Lucy Hind; and Casting Director Lotte Hines CDG.
Minority Report will premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith in London running from 19 April to 18 May 2024, with the show likely to transfer to London’s West End. The play will also run at the Nottingham Playhouse from 16 February to 9 March 2024 and Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 22 March to 6 April 2024.
Set in 2050, the lead character of the movie played by Tom Cruise will become a female character in the play – neuroscientist called Dame Julia Anderton.
She is head of a special police unit that solves crimes before they have taken place. When Anderton is accused of a crime she hasn’t yet committed, she must find out why she’s been framed and by whom.
Casting for Minority Report is to be announced.
Producer Simon Friend said in a statement: “I’m delighted to announce the world premiere stage version of Minority Report, based on Philip K. Dick’s short story, adapted by David Haig. We commissioned this project several years ago, but with its prescient central theme of personal technological surveillance, it has only become more alarmingly relevant to the world in which we live, despite the original story having been written in 1956. I’m also excited to reunite with director Max Webster, after the continued success of our production of Life of Pi, to create another entertaining, ambitious, and thought-provoking piece of theatre, and to partner with some of the country’s best producing theatres in Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Repertory Theatre, and Lyric Hammersmith.”
Writer David Haig said: “It’s been the most exciting challenge of my career: to write a futuristic thriller for the stage, based on one of the greatest sci-fi stories ever told.”
Director Max Webster said: “I’m really pleased to be directing Minority Report – a story so many people know and love – but which, in David Haig’s thrilling retelling, suddenly becomes a chillingly relevant thriller about law, justice and the power of technology to predict the future.”
Minority Report forms part of the Lyric Hammersmith’s 2024 season which also includes the UK premiere of Australian musical FANGIRLS and a revival of Alice Childress’ drama Wedding Band – a play about racial prejudice and ignorance in early 20th-century America.
Minority Report is playing the Lyric Hammersmith from 19 April to 18 May 2024.
