Broadway news: Moulin Rouge to resume in September

The multiple Tony nominee musical Moulin Rouge! The Musical is to resume its Broadway run this September, just a few days before the 74th annual Tony Awards.

Moulin Rouge performances will start on Friday 24 September at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York, and the Tonys are scheduled for 26 September.

The show scooped 14 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

There’s still no news on who will replace the show’s lead actress Karen Olivo, who left the role in protest at Broadway’s silence over movie and theatre producer Scott Rudin.

Cast that are confirmed to return to Broadway are Aaron Tveit, Danny Burstein, Sahr Ngaujah, Robyn Hurder – all of whom bagged Tony nominations, plus Tam Mutu and Ricky Rojas. Ashley Loren plays the alternate Satine.

The show is based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film, and the Broadway production opened at the Al Hirschfeld on 25 July 2019, directed by Alex Timbers.

The London production of Moulin Rouge is scheduled to open at the Piccadilly Theatre in London on Friday 12 November 2021, with an official press night on Wednesday 8 December 2021.

The Broadway show is produced by Carmen Pavlovi, Bill Damaschke, Gerry Ryan, Global Creatures, Aaron Lustbader, Hunter Arnold, Darren Bagert, Erica Lynn Schwartz/Matt Picheny/Stephanie Rosenberg, Adam Blanshay Productions/Nicolas & Charles Talar, Iris Smith, Aleri Entertainment, CJ ENM, Sophie Qi/Harmonia Holdings, Baz & Co./Len Blavatnik, AF Creative Media/International Theatre Fund, Endeavor Content, Tom & Pam Faludy, Gilad-Rogowsky/Instone Productions, John Gore Organization, MEHR-BB Entertainment GmbH, Spencer Ross, Nederlander Presentations/IPN, Eric Falkenstein/Suzanne Grant, Jennifer Fischer, Peter May/Sandy Robertson, Triptyk Studios, Carl Daikeler/Sandi Moran, DeSantis-Baugh Productions, Red Mountain Theatre Company/, Candy Spelling/Tulchin Bartner, Roy Furman and Jujamcyn Theaters.
