First look: new musical ‘& Juliet’ at the Shaftesbury Theatre

Production images have been released of & Juliet, a highly anticipated new musical which opens at the Shaftesbury Theatre later this month.

Early reports from its try-out in Manchester have been overwhelmingly positive where the cast received nightly standing ovations.

Billed as an irreverent and fun-loving musical, the book by ‘Schitt’s Creek‘ scribe David West Read uses Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet as a starting point, but gives Juliet a rather less tragic end. Instead of plunging that dagger into her heart, Juliet heads to Paris with Nurse and friends on a whirlwind trip of romance and self-discovery.

Miriam Teak-Lee (Hamilton, Victoria Palace Theatre) originates the role of Juliet, alongside Oliver Tompsett and Cassidy Janson as Mr and Mrs Shakespeare respectively, with Melanie La Barrie as Nurse and David Bedella as Lance.

The musical is set to a powerhouse score of pop anthems including …Baby One More Time, Everybody, Love Me Like You Do and I Can’t Feel My Face, all brilliantly arranged by the Tony and Grammy Award-winning orchestrator Bill Sherman.

The creative team includes direction by Luke Sheppard (In The Heights), choreography by Jennifer Weber, set design by Soutra Gilmore and costume design by Gareth Owen.
