Reviews are in for The Upstart Crow at the Apollo Theatre in London. The acclaimed comedy is back in London for a strictly limited 10-week season at the Apollo Theatre until 3 December 2022. Producers of The Upstart Crow coming to the Apollo Theatre later this month, have announced the final cast. The show will play a strictly limited 10-week season at the Apollo Theatre, from 23 September to 3 December 2022. Ben Elton's stage adaptation of The Upstart Crow will return to the West End this September for a limited 10-week run. David Mitchell (Pepp Show, Would I Lie To You?) and Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones, Gentleman Jack) will reprise their raucously funny performances - from the original stage production and tv show - as William Shakespeare and Kate. Based on Ben Elton's tv comedy which he wrote to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 2016, the stage adaptation is an all new comedy written specifically for the stage. The production previously ran at the Gielgud Theatre, from 7 February 2019 until March 2020, with the run cut short by the pandemic. The comedy is directed by Olivier Award winner Sean Foley (The Ladykillers, Jeeves and Wooster and The Miser) and will run for 10-weeks at the Apollo Theatre in London from 23 September 2022. David Mitchell will make his West End debut in a new stage adaptation of BBC TV comedy Upstart Crow by Ben Elton. Mitchell will don the bald wig and bardish coddling pouch in his iconic characterisation of Will Shakespeare with Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones, Gentleman Jack) co-starring as the bards friend and house-keeper Kate. Elton, who wrote the sitcom to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 2016, has penned the show which is billed as an all-new comedy written especially for the stage. Set in 1605, Shakespeare is in trouble following the grim reception of his plays Measure for Measure and All's Well That Ends Well. The bard must lift his game or risk facing the wrath of King James, but he is distracted from creating a brilliant new plot by family troubles, including Kate's decision to "liberate" the Globe Theatre's prize dancing bear from exploitation The Peep Show and Would I Lie To You? star said: "I'm delighted to have the opportunity to bring history's most famous balding dramatist to the West End via the amazing comic imagination of Ben Elton."
