What’s the Story?

In Vienna in 1900, the city was vibrant and bustling with intellectual excitement and 10% of the city’s population were Jews. A generation earlier, they had been granted full civil rights by the Emperor, Franz Josef, with hundreds of thousands fleeing from the Pale and Eastern pogroms to the crowded tenements of Leopoldstadt, located in the Jewish quarter of Vienna. It is a story of a family made good. It was not to last.

A passionate drama of love and endurance, Leopoldstadt follows a family as they rediscover what it means to be Jewish in the first half of the 20th century.
