Brendan Coyle in St Nicholas

Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle to star in St Nicholas at the Donmar

Brendan Coyle will star in Conor McPherson’s chilling one-man play St Nicholas at the Donmar Warehouse’s intimate Dryden street studio space this September.

Best known for playing ‘Mr Bates’ in award-winning ITV series Downton Abbey, he is also known for miniseries North & South, and Lark Rise to Candleford.

Coyle’s numerous theatre credits include The Price (Theatre Royal Bath), Mojo (Harold Pinter), Chain Play II, The Late Henry Moss, The Silver Tassie (Almeida), Buried Child, Battle Royal (National Theatre) and The Weir (Royal Court/West End/ New York).

St Nicholas follows a cynical and jaded theatre critic who falls for a beautiful young actress. In pursuing her, he meets a group of modern-day vampires who offer him eternal life – his part of the bargain is to feed their bloodlust.

This is the first time McPherson and Coyle have collaborated since The Weir, for which both received Olivier Awards.

St Nicholas premiered at the Bush Theatre in 1997 with veteran stage and film actor Brian Cox.

This production is directed by Simon Evans with set design by Peter McKintosh, lighting design by Matt Daw and sound design by Christopher Shutt.

St Nicholas will run from 10 September 2018 until 10 October 2018 at Donmar Warehouse Dryden Street Studio Space, London.
