Platonov – Young Chekhov Season at the National Theatre
Exploring the birth of a revolutionary dramatic voice, the Young Chekhov Trilogy comes to the National Theatre following its acclaimed run at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2015.
These three plays, written when Anton Chekhov was young, offer a new perspective on the dramatist, revealing a youthful anger and romanticism that is very different to his mature, more familiar work.
Newly adapted by David Hare (Skylight, Pravada)and directed by Jonathan Kent (Gypsy, Private Lives), the productions, present a unique theatrical event which will see a repertory cast of actors performing 50 parts in Platonov, Ivanov and The Seagull.
Platonov runs from 14 July 2016 until 8 October 2016 at the National Theatre.
Schoolteacher Mikhail Platonov has a problem – he’s irresistible to women. Set in the blazing heat of a rural summer, this freewheeling comedy is a cry of youthful defiance against the compromises of middle age.
The cast features Pip Carter, Jonathan Coy, Nicholas Day, Mark Donald, Col Farrell, Joshua James, Beverley Klein, Des McAleer, James McArdle, Mark Penfold, Brian Pettifer, Luke Pierre, Nina Sosanya, Sarah Twomey, David Verrey, Olivia Vinall and Jade Williams.
Directed by Jonathan Kent with set design by Tom Pye, costume design by Emma Ryott, lighting design by Mark Henderson, music by Jonathan Dove, sound design by Paul Groothuis and fight direction by Paul Benzing. Adaptation by David Hare.
