Thom Southerland directs the European premiere Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musical Allegro at Southwark Playhouse.
With a gorgeous, epic score by Richard Rodgers and a ground-breaking book by Oscar Hammerstein II, Allegro opened in 1947 to the highest advance in Broadway history.
Hailed as “A work of great beauty and purity” by The New York Times, almost 70 years later, this extraordinary musical is finally getting its European première.
Allegro will run from 5 August 2016 until 10 September 2016 at Southwark Playhouse
STORY
Set in a small Midwestern town at the turn of the 20th century, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 1947 musical chronicles nearly four decades in the life of average Joe, Joseph Taylor Jr. from childhood to marriage altar, and the lessons he learns along the way.
CAST
Katie Bernstein will play Emily West alongside Emily Bull as Jennie Brinker, David Delve as Ned Brinker, Julia J Nagle as Marjorie Taylor, Dylan Turner as Charlie Townsend, Susan Travers as Grandma Taylor, Gary Tushaw as Joseph Taylor Jr. and Steve Watts as Dr Taylor.
Completing the cast is Cassandra McCowan, Matthew McDonald, Louise Olley, Benjamin Purkiss, Jacqueline Tate, Samuel Thomas, Leah West and Matthew Woodyatt.
