Casting has been announced for the European premiere of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Allegro, which opens on 5 August 2016 at Southwark Playhouse.
Katie Bernstein (Mrs Henderson Presents, Urinetown) will play Emily West alongside Emily Bull (Sunset Boulevard) as Jennie Brinker, David Delve (Grand Hotel) as Ned Brinker, Julia J Nagle (Dirty Dancing) as Marjorie Taylor, Dylan Turner (Beautiful) as Charlie Townsend and Susan Travers (State Fair) as Grandma Taylor.
They are joined by Gary Tushaw (Sunset Boulevard) as Joseph Taylor Jr. and Steve Watts (Chariots of Fire) as Dr Taylor.
Completing the cast is Cassandra McCowan, Matthew McDonald, Louise Olley, Benjamin Purkiss, Jacqueline Tate, Samuel Thomas, Leah West and Matthew Woodyatt.
Set in a small Midwestern town at the turn of the 20th century, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 1947 musical chronicles nearly four decades in the life of average Joe, Joseph Taylor Jr. from childhood to marriage altar, and the lessons he learns along the way.
Rising star Thom Southerland directs a new adaption of the book which will also have new orchestrations. Southerland’s previous Southwark Theatre productions include Titanic, Grey Gardens and Grand Hotel.
Allegro will run for a six-week season from 5 August 2016 until 10 September 2016 at Southwark Playhouse.
