And it’s something that I have lived through. I am a single mother who has to be financially responsible for both of my children. There’s no man in my life currently, and there’s no man in Anna’s life. So I thought, this is a perfect match for me, especially now.” The King and I is Rodgers and Hammerstein's timeless musical romance, featuring songs including Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, and Shall We Dance. Bartlett Sher’s Camelot to transfer to the West End, closing on Broadway
Bartlett Sher’s Camelot to transfer to the West End, closing on Broadway
The Broadway revival of Camelot is set to close in New York on 23 July 2023. This Broadway revival of Lerner & Loewe's classic 1960's musical is directed by Bartlett Sher (The King & I, My Fair Lady) and has a revised book by Aaron Sorkin. Camelot started performances on 9 March 2023 at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater, officially opening on 13 April 2023. That means it will have run for 38 previews and 115 regular performances by the time it closes in July. Producers of the show issued a statement saying that "plans for a U.S. National Tour and West End production are underway", although no firm dates or venues were given. The show got mixed reviews when it opened on Broadway, and despite getting five Tony Award nominations, including best revival of a musical, it failed to pick up any awards. Sorkin and Sher have collaborated on other shows, including the West End's recent run of Broadway hit To Kill a Mockingbird at the Gielgud Theatre. Camelot stars Andrew Burnap as Arthur, Phillipa Soo as Guenevere, Jordan Donica as Lancelot Du Lac, Dakin Matthews as Merlyn/Pellinore, Taylor Trensch as Mordred and Marilee Talkington as Morgan Le Fey. The score includes “If Ever I Would Leave You,” “The Lusty Month of May” and the title song “Camelot". Earlier this month West End to Broadway transfer Life of Pi also announced it was to close, again after not picking up any Tony Awards. Bartlett Sher's Broadway production of My Fair Lady played the London Coliseum last year before embarking on a UK tour. Coming to the West End next year, is the current touring production of Bartlett Sher's Broadway revival of The King & I, playing the Dominion Theatre from 20 January to 2 March 2024, starring Helen George. https://youtu.be/4cm4RdAqugg
