The Tony Award-winning production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s much-loved musical The King and I is heading back to the West End.
The show will play the Dominion Theatre in London from 20 January to 2 March 2024, starring Helen George (Call The Midwife).
Bartlett Sher’s sumptuous Lincoln Center Theatre production played the London Palladium in 2018, and is currently on a big tour of the UK and Ireland – with dates including Dartford from today, 4 April 2023 (Book tickets here) Southend-on-Sea from 18 April 2023 (Book tickets here), and Cardiff from 25 April 2023 (Book tickets here).
The show boasts a company of over 50 performers and a full orchestra, bringing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s wonderful score to life.
Alongside Bartlett Sher (To Kill a Mockingbird, My Fair Lady, South Pacific), the creative team includes sets by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Catherine Zuber, orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett, musical supervision by Stephen Ridley, and casting direction by James Orange.
Alongside Helen George, The King of Siam will be played by Broadway star Darren Lee (Chicago, Guys and Dolls), with more casting to be announced soon.
Helen George said in a statement: “I am so delighted to continue to play the formidable Anna Leonowens in this incredible production of The King and I. I have really enjoyed playing such an incredibly strong character whilst on tour, but to play her on the West End stage is an honour.”
Producer Howard Panter of Trafalgar Theatres said: “Our last London residency of this multi award-winning production at the London Palladium broke Box Office records, received critical acclaim and enjoyed standing ovations at every show – we were overwhelmed with the rapturous response. So we are thrilled to bring Helen George and Darren Lee who played the King in the Broadway production to the Dominion next year and offer West End audiences the chance to experience this wonderous production once more. This really is musical theatre at its very best.”
