Tartuffe (Remixed) Tickets London
Mark Rylance stars in the world premiere of Tartuffe (Remixed), a bold new adaptation of Molière’s classic comedy at Marylebone Theatre.
Written and directed by Darren Raymond, this fresh reimagining sets Molière’s biting satire within a contemporary African-Caribbean household, blending original verse with modern rhythm, humour and cultural texture.
This strictly limited London run marks Rylance’s return to the Marylebone Theatre following his sold-out Venus and Adonis, and reunites him with director Darren Raymond.
Tartuffe (Remixed) will run at Marylebone Theatre in autumn 2026, with dates to be announced.
What is Tartuffe (Remixed) about?
Tartuffe (Remixed) is a contemporary retelling of Molière’s classic comedy, set within a modern African-Caribbean family during the Christmas season.
In the lead-up to Christmas, the outspoken Afolabi–Williams family gathers for their annual reunion — a tradition filled with tension and hidden drama.
As preparations begin for Marianne’s wedding, the arrival of Tartuffe, a seemingly devout outsider who has won over the family patriarch, raises suspicion across the household.
As festive celebrations unfold, the family must confront growing conflicts around faith, manipulation and control.
At its heart, the play is a study of hypocrisy, faith and the seductive power of a confident liar: how easily trust can be won by someone who says all the right things, and how much can be lost before anyone dares to call it out.
Tartuffe (Remixed) is a bold new interpretation of Molière’s Tartuffe, one of the most enduring comedies in the history of theatre. First staged in 1664, the original play caused such a scandal for its satire of religious hypocrisy that it was banned by King Louis XIV, and it took Molière five years and several rewrites before he was permitted to stage it in full. Despite — or perhaps because of — that controversy, it has remained one of the most performed and studied comedies in the Western canon for over 350 years.
This production, written and directed by Darren Raymond, keeps Molière’s original rhyming couplets intact while relocating the entire story into a contemporary Nigerian-Jamaican household, fusing the 17th-century text with spoken word, live music and the rhythms of contemporary Black British and diaspora culture.
