The smash-hit stage prequel of TV blockbuster Stranger Things is getting filmed for release on Netflix.
The Broadway production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow will be professionally captured this week in New York, for a future streaming release.
Sonia Friedman, who produces the show in New York and London with Netflix, has cancelled some performances from yesterday to this Saturday 14 February to accommodate the filming.
Our take: Off the back of the final season of Stranger Things, it’s a no-brainer for Netflix to capture Stranger Things: The First Shadow for streaming. The best news is that the filmed version will star Louis McCartney as Henry Creel. Director Stephen Daldry has championed Louis from the beginning, and this is a fitting end to his STTFS journey before he leaves the show in March.
Normal New York performances restart from 15 February.

The Broadway cast of Stranger Things stars Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, a role that Louis originated in the London production in 2023, before opening the Broadway production in 2025.
Louis McCartney scored a Tony Award nomination for his performance, and leaves the Broadway run next month.
Stranger Things in London
In London, the show is now playing at the West End’s Phoenix Theatre.
The West End production currently stars Jack Christou (Matilda The Musical) as Henry Creel, and Stewart Clarke (Les Misérables) as Dr Brenner, with Avril Maponga (Witness for the Prosecution) as Patty Newby, Max Potter (A Monster Calls) as Bob Newby, Adam Wadsworth (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as James Hopper Jr. and Edie Wright (Stranger Things: The First Shadow) as Joyce Maldonado.
Directed by Stephen Daldry (The Crown, Billy Elliot) and co-directed by Justin Martin, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is based on the Netflix series Stranger Things created by the Duffer Brothers, and is written by Kate Trefry (Stranger Things) with an original story by the Duffer Brothers, award-winning writer Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Adolescence), and Kate Trefry.
The London production scored an Olivier Award win for Best Entertainment at the 2024 Olivier Awards, and fantastic reviews from the London theatre critics.
