The red windmill is stopping on 45th Street, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical has posted its closing notices on Broadway.
Producer Carmen Pavlovic of Global Creatures announced the news today, 5 February 2026. The Tony Award-winning show will end its Broadway run at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Sunday 26 July 2026.
The show opened on Broadway in July 2019, and by closing time will have played 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews in New York. It ranks as the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history.
A New York record-breaker
The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 movie has proved box-office gold in New York, and is currently the highest-grossing production in the Al Hirschfeld Theatre’s century-long history. Moulin Rouge! was the only musical from the shortened 2019 – 2020 Covid season that recouped its investment.
The production was also a critical success, sweeping the 2021 Tony Awards with ten wins, including Best Musical.

A global spectacle
The Broadway chapter may be closing on Moulin Rouge! but the show continues to play around the world – most notably in London’s West End, where Moulin Rouge! is now in its fifth year at the Piccadilly Theatre, booking to 1 August 2026.
The musical has already reached over 12 million people worldwide through 15 different productions, and fans can still catch the show in:
- London’s West End (Piccadilly Theatre)
- The North American National Tour
- Germany, The Netherlands, and South Korea
- The newly launched Moulin Rouge! World Tour, with dates in the UK through to October
A creative force
Directed by Alex Timbers, with a book by John Logan and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the musical reimagines the film’s iconic “mash-up” of music styles. The score, supervised by Justin Levine, spans over 160 years of music, blending classic tracks from the movie with contemporary hits from artists like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.
Broadway fans have until July 2026 to experience the glitz, grandeur, and glory of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre’s most successful resident. As Pavlovic teased, the production likely has a few more surprises up its sleeve before the “chickens” leave the coop for good.
