About Summerfolk

A summer of pleasure. A storm on the horizon.

It’s 1905, and Russia’s privileged elite retreat to the countryside to swim, sip champagne, and flirt their way through long, golden days. But as they revel in leisure and luxury, Varvara senses that their blissful escape is built on borrowed time.

As the heat intensifies, so too does the unease — and the party begins to unravel in Gorky’s timeless satire on denial, complacency, and impending social change.

Summerfolk marks a major revival of Gorky’s classic play in a bold new adaptation that speaks powerfully to our own turbulent age.

Don’t miss this dazzling and unsettling revival of Summerfolk — a story of indulgence, unrest and the gathering storm.

Summerfolk runs from 6 March – 29 April 2026 at the Olivier Theatre at the National Theatre.
