Tom Chambers and Tachia Newall will lead the cast of Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts, the first-ever major stage adaptation of Colin Dexter’s iconic detective, opening at Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 28 August 2025 before touring across the UK.
Chambers, previously announced in the role of Chief Inspector Morse, is best known for Father Brown, Holby City, and winning Strictly Come Dancing. He is joined by Waterloo Road and Doctor Who star Tachia Newall, newly cast as Detective Sergeant Lewis, the trusted partner who helps Morse navigate a chilling new case.
Written by Alma Cullen, who scripted several acclaimed episodes of the original ITV series, and directed by Anthony Banks, the play follows Morse as he investigates the sudden onstage death of a young actress—an inquiry that soon unearths secrets from his own past.
The full cast includes Teresa Banham (The Crown, Netflix) as Ellen; James Gladdon (The Score, Theatre Royal Haymarket) as Freddy; Spin Glancy (Forty Years On, Chichester Festival Theatre) as Justin; Robert Mountford (Much Ado About Nothing, Globe Theatre) as Lawrence Baxter and Paul Kincaid; Olivia Onyehara (All’s Well That Ends Well / Richard III, RSC) as Rebecca / Harriet / Ellen; Charlotte Randle (Vardy V Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial, Wyndham’s Theatre) as Verity; and Eliza Teale (Filumena, Theatre Royal Windsor). RADA graduate Josh Katembela completes the ensemble, making his touring theatre debut.

Director Anthony Banks said: “I’m very excited to start working with this fantastic cast who will bring these much-loved characters to life and make them their own. Alma Cullen’s original Morse story contains a play-within-a-play—an inspired concept for a murder mystery which reveals the similarities between playing a part when acting and covering-up a crime.”
Presented by Melting Pot and Birmingham Rep, the production will tour through April 2026, with stops including Richmond, York, Nottingham, Belfast, Sheffield, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Salford. Based on Dexter’s enduring characters, the show offers a fresh theatrical spin on the legendary detective’s world, which has captivated TV audiences for over three decades.
