Inspector Morse is coming to the stage later this year, in a major new tour starring Tom Chambers.
Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts will star Tom Chambers as Morse, and marks the first-ever major stage adaptation of Colin Dexter’s iconic detective.
The tour starts at Birmingham Rep on 28 August 2025, and stops on the tour include London Richmond, York, Nottingham, Bromley, Belfast, Brighton, Sheffield, Cheltenham, Woking, Norwich, Aylesbury, Liverpool, Oxford, Leeds, Newcastle, Malvern, Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Salford.
Written by Alma Cullen, who also scripted episodes of the ITV drama, based on the characters by Colin Dexter, the story is set in the world of theatre, and promises to be a chilling murder mystery, and a must-see for fans of compelling detective stories and mysteries.
Tom Chambers won the sixth series of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. On TV, he plays Chief Inspector Sullivan in Father Brown. Tom’s stage credits include Murder in the Dark, Elf The Musical, Dial M For Murder, Crazy For You, White Christmas, and Top Hat.
Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts is directed by Anthony Banks (The Gap, Dial M for Murder, Steel Magnolias), with further creatives and casting to be announced.

Actor Tom Chambers said in a statement: “I am absolutely thrilled to be bringing to the stage the nationally loved character of Inspector Morse. Played by John Thaw in the TV series, it is an iconic role which audiences clearly loved alongside the Morse murder mysteries. This brand-new production is a tantalising tale, rich in story and character and even unpicks some of Morse’s closely guarded personal life. It’s going to be a fabulous evening of entertainment.”
Simon Friend, co-producer of the production, said: “Bringing the nation’s favourite detective to the stage is a very rare proposition. The genre has never been more popular, and we look forward to sharing this terrifically exciting production with audiences across the country from later this year, and continuing our ongoing collaboration with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.”
