Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin to star in two major London productions
Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin — sons of the late Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens — will appear on London stages this autumn in two major productions, both announced today.
Toby Stephens (Oslo, Hamlet) is set to play Captain Hook in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s revival of Wendy and Peter Pan, adapted by Ella Hickson from J.M. Barrie’s beloved tale. Directed by Jonathan Munby, the production runs at the Barbican Theatre from 21 October to 22 November 2025 as part of the RSC’s winter season.

Meanwhile, his older brother Chris Stephens, known professionally as Chris Larkin (Noises Off, Outlander), will star as Giles in Andrew Keatley’s The Gathered Leaves, which returns to the Park Theatre for a strictly limited run from 13 August to 20 September 2025. The cast also features Jonathan Hyde (Titanic) as William Pennington, Joanne Pearce (Hamlet, RSC) as Olivia, and Richard Stirling (Cecil Beaton’s Diaries) as Samuel.

Their mother, Dame Maggie Smith, died on 27 September 2024, aged 89. One of the most distinguished actors of her generation, she enjoyed a career spanning over 70 years. Smith won two Academy Awards, for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1970) and California Suite (1979), along with four further nominations and eight BAFTA Awards. On stage, she earned six Olivier nominations and a Special Olivier Award in 2010. She was also nominated for two Tony Awards, winning in 1990 for Lettice and Lovage. Much-loved by global audiences, she portrayed Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter film series and Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey, cementing her legacy as both a critical and popular icon.
Their father, Sir Robert Stephens, was also an acting titan of British stage and screen. A founding member of the National Theatre under Laurence Olivier, he was widely acclaimed for his Shakespearean roles and earned a knighthood in 1995 for his services to drama. He died later that year at the age of 64, leaving behind a formidable theatrical legacy.
