British theatre had a good night at this year’s Tony Awards last night, Sunday 8 June 2025.
Hosted by British theatre star Cynthia Erivo (Dracula), shows and talent from the UK took home an impressive 13 awards, out of a possible 26 gongs (plus Special Awards) up for grabs.
Winners last night included Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which was developed and premiered in London, and won the most Tony Awards for a play – three design awards for set (Miriam Buether and 59), lighting (Jon Clark) and sound (Paul Arditti) design, plus a Special Tony Award for the show’s advanced illusions and technical effects.
Jamie Lloyd’s production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard took home three awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, Nicole Scherzinger winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, and a Best Lighting Design of a Musical award for Jack Knowles.
Sunset Boulevard was originally staged at the West End’s Savoy Theatre in London, and also won seven Olivier Awards.
Operation Mincemeat’s Jak Malone won Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Operation Mincemeat has proved a huge British theatre success, starting out at London fringe venue the New Diorama Theatre, playing a number of runs in off-West End playhouses, and now enjoying a long and successful run at the West End’s Fortune Theatre.
Another production to start life in London (albeit following its Sydney world premiere) is The Picture of Dorian Gray, which saw Sarah Snook win Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, and a Best Costume Design of a Play award for Marg Horwell.
Other British winners this year include Jonathan Deans, well-known West End and Royal Ballet & Opera sound designer, who won Best Sound Design of a Musical for Buena Vista Social Club; George Reeve, video and projection designer, won Best Scenic Design of a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending alongside Dane Laffrey; and West End and Broadway producer Sonia Friedman’s production of Eureka Day won Best Revival of a Play. Sonia also produced Stranger Things: The First Shadow, with Netflix.
