Stage and screen star Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, The Split) is set to star in the world premiere of The Unbelievers at the Royal Court Theatre in London.
The new drama is by Nick Payne (Constellations, We Live in Time), and will be directed by multi-award-winner Marianne Elliott (War Horse, Company, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).
The Unbelievers is running at the Royal Court from 10 October to 29 November 2025.
The Unbelievers is a startling portrait of motherhood, faith, family – and the lengths we go to for those we refuse to forget, centred on a teenager who disappears, and a mother who will never give up hope.
Joining Marianne Elliott in the creative team is Bunny Christie (Company, People Places and Things), with further creatives to be announced.
The show is a co-production with Playful Productions.
Writer Nick Payne said in a statement: “I love the Royal Court with all my heart. Long live the Royal Court”.
Marianne Elliott said: “I am so thrilled to be returning to the Royal Court, where I started my London theatre career – as an Associate Director, under Ian Rickson. I am even more thrilled to be returning with this honest exploration of motherhood by Nick Payne – something we see quite rarely in my opinion. This continues my long association with designer Bunny Christie and actor Nicola Walker. I cannot wait to get started!”
The Unbelievers is part of the Royal Court’s new season of plays for 2025, including World Premieres of Deaf Republic, Cow | Deer, and Porn Play, and two touring productions After the Act, and ECHO.
Coming up at the Royal Court Theatre is Manhunt adapted and directed by Robert Icke, from 28 March; Scenes From A Repatriation from 25 April; and 4.48 Psychosis from 12 June.
Nicola Walker is currently starring in new West End comedy Unicorn at the Garrick Theatre until 26 April.
