Stage and screen star Tuppence Middleton (The Motive and the Cue) is set to join the cast of The Years at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre in London.
As originally announced, Romola Garai (Vigil) is scheduled to perform in the show until 8 March 2025, and Tuppence Middleton takes over from 10 March 2025.
Based on Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s novel Les Années, and adapted and directed by Eline Arbo, The Years is booking at the Harold Pinter Theatre until 19 April 2025.
The Years also stars Deborah Findlay (The Split, Orlando), Gina McKee (Dear England, Notting Hill), Anjli Mohindra (Noises Off) and Harmony Rose-Bremner (Hamnet).
The understudies are Shira Abkin, Holly Georgia, Pamela Hardman, Adrien Spencer, and Sarah Waddell.
Tuppence Middleton’s stage credits include The Motive and the Cue at the National Theatre and in the West End’s Noël Coward, plus a planned transfer to Broadway. Her film work includes Lord of Misrule, Downton Abbey: A New Era, Mank, The Current War, The Imitation Game; and on TV she is known for Our House, Sense8, Shadowplay, and War and Peace.

To be a part of this production exploring growth, love, grief, sexuality, history, politics, and time – is a dream come true for any actor.”
Romola Garai also recently starred in Giant at the Royal Court Theatre, directed by Nicholas Hytner and staring John Lithgow. That show is also transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre, from 26 April 2025, but Romola isn’t transferring with it. She told The Sunday Times that she needs to put in some family time, doing the school run after nearly a full year of working evenings and weekends in the theatre.
In The Years, five different actors bring one woman’s personal and political story to life, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing post-war Europe.
At the Almeida Theatre, the production enjoyed a tremendous response from London’s theatre critics, with five stars from the Independent, Financial Times, i News, The Stage and the Guardian.
Joining Eline Arbo in the creative team are Music Supervisor and Sound Designer Thijs van Vuure, Set Designer Juul Dekker, Lighting Designer Varja Klosse, Costume Designer Rebekka Wörmann, and Casting Director Amy Ball CDG. The play has an English version by Stephanie Bain.
The original production and adaptation of The Years was first produced as De jaren by Het Nationale Theater in The Hague, Netherlands in 2022; and the play’s UK premiere at the Almeida Theatre ran from 27 July 2024 until 31 August 2024.
The Years is playing at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London until 19 April 2025.
