Award-winning Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is set to return to London’s West End in 2025, starring in the world premiere of new play My Master Builder, directed by Michael Grandage.

The play by American playwright and screenwriter Lila Raicek is inspired by Ibsen’s classic drama The Master Builder, and will run at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London from 17 April to 12 July 2025.

It will be the first time in 17 years that Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge) has performed on stage.

My Master Builder promises to be a very modern take on the original drama, set in the Hamptons on the eve of the 4th of July.

Elena Solness is a publishing magnate, about to throw a party to celebrate her husband, architect Henry Solness, as he unveils his latest building masterpiece. Their already vulnerable marriage is completely shattered by the unexpected arrival of Mathilde, a former student of Henry’s, with whom he previously shared an intimate connection. As the evening unfolds, each find themselves face to face with a reckoning that indelibly tilts the axis of their lives.

Further casting is to be announced.

Michael Grandage (Disney’s Frozen, Orlando, My Policeman) and Ewan McGregor have worked together on a number of other theatre projects, including Othello and Guys and Dolls, both at the Donmar Warehouse when Grandage was Artistic Director.

There are also rumours that My Master Builder will be heading to Broadway with Ewan McGregor, although no details have been revealed.

Ewan McGregor is most famous for his film work, including Trainspotting, Moulin Rouge, Star Wars, Brassed Off, Black Hawk Down, Angels & Demons, and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

On TV, Ewan’s credits include A Gentleman in Moscow, Halston, and Fargo.

Joining Michael Grandage in the creative team are set and costume designer Richard Kent, and composer and sound designer Adam Cork, with further creatives to be announced.

The play is produced by Michael Grandage Productions (Orlando, Backstairs Billy), John Brant’s MarketStall Productions (Macbeth starring Ralph Fiennes) and Seaview Productions (Stereophonic, Romeo + Juliet starring Kit Connor, Once Upon a Mattress).

Ewan McGregor said in a statement: “It’s such a thrill be returning to the stage – and to work with Michael again, an actor’s director with whom I have had some of my happiest working experiences. He’s a generous collaborator, who enables you to discover the play together afresh in the rehearsal room. And what a play – I love where Lila has taken the story, a very modern take on today’s sexual politics.”

Michael Grandage said: “It’s always a privilege to open a new play in the West End and to bring emerging and original voices to as wide an audience as possible. I’m excited to collaborate with writer Lila Raicek, staging My Master Builder in London this spring. The production is also a joyful reunion with Ewan McGregor – an extraordinary stage actor, working together for the first time on a world premiere, in a brand-new partnership for MGC with MarketStall and Seaview.”

My Master Builder is playing at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London from 17 April to 12 July 2025.
