Christine Baranski and Richard E. Grant’s West End comedy Hay Fever, currently playing at Wyndham’s Theatre until 12 December 2027, will be broadcast to cinemas in 2027, alongside ther return of Mark Gatiss and Johnny Flynn in The Motive and the Cue.

National Theatre Live has announced two major cinema releases for 2027. Noël Coward’s comedy Hay Fever, starring two-time Tony Award winner Christine Baranski and Academy Award nominee Richard E. Grant, has been filmed at Wyndham’s Theatre in the West End and is set to arrive in cinemas for a limited time in January 2027. It will then be followed by Jack Thorne’s The Motive and the Cue, starring Mark Gatiss, Johnny Flynn and Tuppence Middleton in February.

All NT Live releases are captured in front of a live audience, in a process honed over 16 years that has reached viewers at more than 1,000 venues across the UK and many more worldwide.

Hay Fever in the West End

This production marks Christine Baranski’s West End debut, as she takes the stage as Judith Bliss alongside Richard E. Grant, who returns to the stage for the first time in two decades. This dazzling new production of Coward’s comedy of bad manners, directed by Emily Burns, has been praised as a “fun and frothy revival” by London Theatre, while The Standard called it a “winning star vehicle” for leads Christine Baranski and Richaard E. Grant. WhatsOnStage singled out Baranski’s “instinctive comic timing”, and The Telegraph noted that Grant is “in his element”.

The cast also includes Nancy Carroll (Myra Arundel), Will Close (Simon Bliss), Charles Edwards (Richard Greatham), Ophelia Lovibond (Sorel Bliss), Ash Hunter (Sandy Tyrell), Lucy Karczewski (Jackie Coryton) and Jo McInnes (Clara), completed by Helena Antoniou, Charlotte Avery, Alan Drake and Shaun Mendum.

The creative team includes set and costume design by Frankie Bradshaw, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick and sound design by Tingying Dong. Casting is by Jim Carnahan CSA and Liz Fraser CSA.

The Motive and the Cue returns

Following a sold-out run at the National Theatre in 2023, a West End transfer and a hugely successful original cinema release, Jack Thorne’s play The Motive and the Cue is also set to return to the big screen in 2027. Directed by Sam Mendes and starring Mark Gatiss and Johnny Flynn, it is inspired by the making of Richard Burton and John Gielgud’s landmark 1964 Broadway production of Hamlet, offering an insight into the politics of the rehearsal room and the relationship between art and celebrity.

Gatiss won an Olivier Award for his performance as John Gielgud, while Johnny Flynn stars as Richard Burton with Tuppence Middleton as Elizabeth Taylor.

The Sunday Times called it a “thrilling rollercoaster of high drama”, and across its National Theatre run, West End transfer and original NT Live release it has been seen by more than 240,000 people worldwide.
