The creator of the Back to the Future movies and musical wants to do a movie version of hit West End show Back to the Future The Musical.
Oscar winning director Robert Zemeckis has said that he would like to make a new Back to the Future movie, this time based on the West End and Broadway show.
Robert Zemeckis directed all three of the hugely successful Back to the Future movies about mad scientist Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, and his teenage companion Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Zemeckis was asked if there were other projects he would like to do before he retires.
Zemeckis went on to say that he would love to make Back to the Future The Musical: The Movie, in the same way that Mel Brooks took his The Producers movie, turned it into a musical, and then back into a film.
Robert Zemeckis said in the podcast: “I would like to do the Back to the Future, the musical. Just like [Mel] Brooks did The Producers. I would love to do that. I think that would be great… I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, nothing I can do.”
Hopefully, however, all is not lost and Zemeckis will get his way with a movie version of the show – even if it’s a pro shot for streamers and to download.
The Olivier Award-winning West End show opened at the Adelphi Theatre in 2021, and celebrated its third birthday in September.
The cast of the West End show includes recent graduate Vasco Emauz as Marty McFly, with Cory English as ‘Doctor Emmett Brown’, Sarah Goggin as ‘Lorraine Baines’, Patricia Wilkins as ‘Linda McFly’, Orlando Gibbs as ‘George McFly’, Liam McHugh as ‘Dave McFly’, C.J.
