Nominations have been announced for the Black British Theatre Awards 2024.

The Black British Theatre Awards are the UK’s only awards to celebrate the excellence and influence of black performers and creatives in the theatre industry.

Nominations include productions and performances that ran from 1 August 2023 to 31 July 2024.

Winners will be announced at their sixth annual BBTA ceremony on Monday 4 November 2024 at the Lyceum Theatre (The Lion King) in London.

Awards already announced include actor Danny Sapani (King Lear – Almeida Theatre) who has won the Founders Choice Award; and dancer, choreographer and teacher Namron OBE, who has won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In the acting categories, Jamie Lloyd’s production of Romeo & Juliet scored four nominations, including for Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as Juliet.

In the musicals category, stars nominated include Ivano Turco (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), Layton Williams (Cabaret), Karis Anderson (Tina – The Tina Turner Musical), Ashley Campbell (Just For One Day), Jenny Fitzpatrick (Oliver! – Leeds Playhouse), and Michael Ahomka-Lindsay (Cabaret).

Best musical production nominees are Jamaica Love (UK Tour), MJ The Musical at the Prince Edward Theatre, and Tina – The Tina Turner Musical at the Aldwych Theatre.

Best play production nominees are Ain’t I A Woman? at the Tower Theatre, Choir Boy at the Bristol Old Vic, and Swim, Aunty, Swim! at the Belgrade Theatre Coventry.

The criteria for nominees is that they must be a Black British national of African and/or Caribbean descent or of mixed ethnicity of African and/or Caribbean descent, and a long-term resident in the UK (three years or more). For productions to qualify, they must have at least 50% of Black performers in the cast of African and/or Caribbean descent or of mixed ethnicity of African and/or Caribbean descent, and the production can also be of Black subject matter.

Last year’s winners of the Black British Theatre Awards 2023 included West End musical Sylvia winning two awards.
