Shows have been announced for this year’s Korean Season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024.
The Korean Season will run from 1 to 25 August 2024 at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.
The annual showcase of Korean musicals, dance and theatre includes the European premiere of new show You & It: The Musical, presented by EG Musical Company & Orchestra and produced by Carter Dixon McGill Productions.
In the show, after losing wife Mina to a sudden accident, Gyujin suffers from memories of his wife that remain throughout the house. Unable to hold back the longing, Gyujin orders an AI robot that eventually replicates his dead wife. However, Gyujin gradually feels the difference between his beloved wife and the robot, and Mina, who does not even know that she is a robot, cannot understand Gyujin pushing her away. Will Gyujin and the robot Mina return to a happy normal life?
You & It: The Musical runs from 1 to 25 August at the Assembly Rooms.
EG Musical Company & Orchestra are also presenting You & It for a one-night-only performance at Seven Dials Playhouse in London next month, on 10 May 2024, starring Rumi Sutton (Your Lie in April) as Mina and Christopher Chung (Here Lies Love) as Kyujin.
The musical originally had a showcase last year at Wonderville in London, under the title “You&AI”. The show first premiered in Daegu Korea in 2018, winning the Creative Musical Award at the 2019 DIMF Daegu International Musical Festival.
Also in the Edinburgh season is Ari: The Spirit of Korea, which won the Best Physical Theatre Award 2023 at the Adelaide Fringe, and promises to be a transformative musical odyssey that brings the 600-year-old folk song Arirang to life, exploring universal themes of love and connection.
Other shows include award-winning Korean drama Black and White Tea Room: Counsellor, centred on a kind-hearted former police officer-cum-counselor; and dance piece Sleeper by Jajack Movement.
Korean musicals – or K-musicals – are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. New Korean musical Marie Curie is heading to London’s Charing Cross Theatre in June starring Alisa Davidson as Marie Curie.
Musicals that have started and succeed in Korea and Japan are also making their way to London. Last year Death Note: The Musical made a big impact on the West End, playing a number of sold-out concerts; and earlier this month Your Lie in April played a successful one-nighter at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
