The beautiful Opera Air Theatre in Regent’s Park once again proves the perfect setting for a show as Rachel Kavanaugh directs the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music.
Regent’s Park may be short of mountains but Peter McKintosh does a stirling job of the design, evoking an Alpine setting in the park.
Olivier Award nominees Charlotte Wakefield as Maria Rainer and Michael Xavier as Captain Von Trapp lead a great ensemble cast that includes Kimberly Blake, Faye Brookes (Liesl) Helen Colby, Samuel Edwards, Tim Frances, Victoria Hinde, Helen Hobson (Mother Abbess), Christopher Hunt, Caroline Keiff (Elsa Schraeder), Michael Matus, Harry Morrison, Gemma Page, Laura Pick, Stuart Matthew Price, Anna Simmons, Chloe Taylor, Joshua Tonks (Rolf), and Helen Walsh.
Reviews for the show have been strong with the Telegraph awarding it five stars and hailing Charlotte Wakefield as “superb as Maria: funny, forthright and movingly vulnerable when the emotional stakes are high”.
The Sound of Music is playing at the Open Air Theatre in regent’s Park until 7 September.
