The much-rumoured screen-to-stage adaptation of Oscar winning movie La La Land is finally happening!
Emmy and Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Marc Platt (Wicked, Dear Evan Hansen) is to produce a major new Broadway musical version of the film.
The stage musical will be directed by Bartlett Sher (My Fair Lady, Camelot), based on a book by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ayad Akhtar and Barrymore Award-winner Matthew Decker.
La La Land The Musical is set to feature music from the film – composed by Oscar winner Justin Hurwitz, and with lyrics by Oscar and Tony Award-winning composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen).
The movie picked up six Oscars after it was released in 2017, directed by Damien Chazelle (Babylon) and starred Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The story follows an aspiring actress and a jazz musician as they follow their dreams in Los Angeles.
Producer Marc Platt said in a press statement: “I’m thrilled to reunite with Lionsgate and the incredible team behind La La Land to adapt the movie for the Broadway stage, the next exciting chapter in its evolution,” said Platt, who also produced the movie. “We’ve assembled a world-class team to create a musical that will delight La La Land’s millions of current fans and introduce the property to a whole new audience.”
Jenefer Brown, Lionsgate EVP & Head of Global Products & Experiences (Lionsgate produced the movie), said: “With La La Land in Concert marking its sixth year of touring worldwide and the original film a timeless and globally revered cultural touchstone, we’re excited to provide fans yet another way to experience the original movie”.
Lionsgate were talking up the idea of a stage show of La La Land way back in 2017, so it’s great that it is finally happening.
There’s currently no news on timing, dates, cast or Broadway venue.
Bartlett Sher is a busy man at the moment, directing a major revival of Camelot on Broadway, and with UK tours of his productions of The King and I, and My Fair Lady, also running.
There is no news on whether La La Land The Musical will head to the West End following its Broadway premiere, but we remain very positive!
