The West End’s loss is Broadway’s gain next season, as a starry production of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House goes to New York instead of London.
Originally scheduled for a June to September 2020 run at London’s Playhouse Theatre (now the Kit Kat Club where Cabaret is playing), the Jessica Chastain star vehicle will now play Broadway in Spring 2023.
At time of press there’s no further news on dates, theatre, casting, or creative team – apart from director Jamie Lloyd and adaptor Amy Herzog (4000 Miles).
The news of the move was broken by Lloyd’s company, and will be produced by The Jamie Lloyd Company, Ambassador Theatre Group, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Wessex Grove.
The production promises to be a radical reworking of Ibsen’s classic.
In a press statement Jessica Chastain said, “When I sat down with the brilliant Jamie Lloyd five years ago to discuss a possible collaboration, I was over the moon when we decided on A Doll’s House. We were set to start rehearsals in London in April 2020, but little did we know what the world (and a pandemic) had in store for us.”
Chastain went on to say that, “while home in New York, walking around the empty theatre district made my heart hurt. New York has been my home for over 20 years and it’s immensely important to me to take care of this city and support my artist neighbours. So, I couldn’t be happier to play Nora in A Doll’s House on Broadway! I’m very excited to work with Jamie and the incredible Amy Herzog in this city that formed me. I hope in the future to work in the West End but for now I can’t wait to be together with all of the wonderful people of New York and my artistic community on Broadway.”
Jessica Chastain last appeared on Broadway in the 2012 revival of The Heiress.
Current and forthcoming Jessica Chastain TV projects include The Good Nurse on Netflix and country music legend Tammy Wynette in Showtime’s George & Tammy.
Jamie Lloyd’s most recent West End production was The Seagull at the Harold Pinter Theatre starring Emilia Clarke.
