Emma Thompson

Stage Spy: Is Nanny McPhee heading to the West End?

Is Emma Thompson finally bringing her musical version of Nanny McPhee to the West End stage?

She recently told the New Yorker (see link below) that she hopes to premiere Nanny McPhee on the London stage in 2023.

Emma Thompson is currently starring in the movie version of Matilda The Musical playing Miss Trunchbull, based on the Matilda The Musical stage show at the Cambridge Theatre in London. The movie has got great reviews, and opens in the UK on 25 November 2022.

Thompson wrote and starred in the 2005 movie of Nanny McPhee directed by Kirk Jones, and the 2010 sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.

The musical version has music by Gary Clark (Sing Street), with Thompson writing the show’s book, and co-writing the lyrics with Clark.

Gary Clark has created a kind of Victorian punk sound for the music, which Thompson describes as a “cross between the Tiger Lillies and Tom Waits’s Swordfishtrombones”.

Thompson is also deciding on whether to direct the show herself, although she has never directed before. Previous workshops were directed by Katy Rudd (Ocean at the End of the Lane) and included Emma’s sister Sophie Thompson (Present Laughter).

There’s no news on dates, cast or creative team, but we have everything crossed for a 2023 West End premiere.
