From stage to screen

Before its musical transformation, Nanny McPhee (2005) was a cinematic hit starring Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, and Angela Lansbury. Adapted from the Nurse Matilda books, the film’s success led to the sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang.

This 2027 production marks the first time the magic will be felt live on stage.

A Powerhouse Creative Team

Award-winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson leads the development of the new musical. She wrote the screenplays for both Nanny McPhee films, as well as the 1995 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, for which she won an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Joining her on the creative team is director Katy Rudd (The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Ballet Shoes), known for her visually stunning work. With Rudd at the helm, the production promises to bring Nanny McPhee’s “small miracles” to life in surprising ways.

The musical will also feature a music & lyrics by Gary Clark (Sing Street, Modern Love).

In a house where chaos reigns, the seven Brown children have successfully driven away seventeen nannies. Their father, the widower Cedric Brown, is at his wit’s end—until a mysterious, formidable figure appears at the door.

Nanny McPhee doesn’t just watch children; she transforms them. Using her mystical walking stick and five essential lessons, she teaches the unruly siblings that “when you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay. When you want me, but no longer need me, then I must go.”

As the family faces a crisis involving their great-aunt Lady Adelaide, they must learn to stand together before they are torn apart.
