What's the story of A Sherlock Carol?

In the show, it is three Christmases since the famous confrontation with his nemesis Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls, and Sherlock Holmes has little appetite for mince pies or for solving crime. Wandering through Victorian London, he meets a grown-up and not-so-Tiny Tim who implores him to investigate the mysterious death of his reformed benefactor, one Ebenezer Scrooge…

An impossible murder, a threatening letter, and a missing diamond – it’s just enough to intrigue the great detective. But it’s a dark and treacherous Christmas Eve, and once again the night is haunted by the spirits of the past, present, and future. Using his powers of deduction, can Holmes overcome his own ghosts to crack the case?

First up in the Spring 2023 season is new verbatim play Grenfell: System Failure – Scenes from the Inquiry, from the official inquiry into the 2017 Grenfell Tower tragedy. This is the second part of a gripping exploration of the Grenfell Tragedy Inquiry adapted by Nicolas Kent and Richard Norton Taylor, and interrogates the failures of the authorities that led to the tragedy, and how bereaved families were failed by the London Fire Brigade and the Local Authority.  Directed by Nicholas Kent, the play runs from 14 to 26 March 2023 at Marylebone Theatre. The play will also tour to London's the Playground Theatre (18 - 25 February) and The Tabernacle (27 February - 12 March). The theatre's big new Spring production is the world premiere of Eugene O’Hare’s play The Dry House, about two sisters in County Down overcoming the effects of alcoholism on their family. The play by actor and playwright Eugene O’Hare (Outlander, Black Mirror, Lady Chatterley's Lover) will feature an all-female cast, and runs at Marylebone Theatre from 31 March to 6 May 2023. Finally, in June 2023 Marylebone Theatre presents New York pianist and actor Roger Peltzman with his moving show Dedication, recounting his family’s tragic history fleeing the Nazis in war-torn Europe. The play is centred on Peltzman's uncle Norbert Stern who was, like his nephew, a brilliant pianist, and was caught in the midst of the devastating rise of Nazism and murdered at Auschwitz. Dedication runs from 7 to 24 June 2023. The Spring season also includes a number of music, comedy and spoken word performances from January to June 2023. Marylebone Theatre opened in Autumn 2022, and its patrons include Academy Award-winning actor Sir Mark Rylance, director of the English National Opera Martyn Brabbins, and the esteemed cross-bench peer Baroness Usha Prasher. New London theatre the Marylebone Theatre opens with Dmitry starring Tom Byrne
London has a new theatre! The Marylebone Theatre, originally known as Steiner Hall, has been recently refurbished as a cross-cultural, mixed use performance space close to Baker Street. The venue intends to produce its own work and receive incoming companies. It also has a solid list of patrons, including Oscar winner Sir Mark Rylance, director of the English National Opera Martyn Brabbins, and Baroness Usha Prasher. Its first theatre production will be the world premiere of a realisation of Friedrich Schiller's unfinished play Demetrius. Titled Dmitry, the play stars The Crown's Tom Byrne in the title role, and runs from tomorrow, 29 September, to 5 November 2022. Joining Byrne in the cast is Poppy Miller (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) as Dmitry's mother, Tsarina Maria; Globe Associate Artist James Garnon as Cardinal Odowalsky, and Aurora Dawson-Hunte (The Mirror and the Light) is Marina. The cast also includes Piotr Baumann (Coronation Street) as Korela and Mark Hadfield (Pinocchio) as Prince Mnishek, Ammar Haj Ahmad, Daniel Hawksford, Oleg Mirochnikov, Daniel York Loh, Lev Levermore, Jonathan Oliver, Clifford Samuel and Phoebe Strickland. The cast of Dmitry Written by Peter Oswald, who was resident playwright at Shakespeare's Globe under Mark Rylance, Dmitry is directed by former Young Vic Artistic Director Tim Supple, who returns to the London theatre scene after 15 years of international work. Dmitry is set in Moscow in 1605. Ruthless tsar Boris Gudonov, former chief of Ivan the Terrible's secret police, rules through fear and oppression. In Poland, a formidable young opponent - Dmitry - appears claiming to be the missing son of Ivan the Terrible and the rightful tsar of Russia. The Polish army, fuelled by the fear of the Russian threat, takes up Dmitry's cause to march on the Kremlin to capture the throne. This poetic drama cuts to the heart of 21st century politics through a rich imagining of Eastern Europe and Russia's shared history. Artistic Director of Marylebone Theatre Alexander Gifford said: "I am delighted that our launch production has attracted such an excellent cast. It includes both rising stars and established names. As a venue, we are daring to open with a big, classical production and it is thrilling that it will be carried by such a brilliant and experienced group. I am particularly pleased that our actors come from a very broad range of cultures and racial backgrounds. Dmitry is an epic play in verse with extraordinary dramatic intensity. I am confident that our cast will imbue it with the power and passion it deserves." Marylebone Theatre Dmitry Director Tim Supple said: "Our first rate creative team is now joined by a tremendous cast that draws on the riches of London's uniquely skilled and diverse acting community. There can be no greater pleasure for a director than opening a new theatre with a play that speaks directly to a major concern of our time and that does so with the combined potency of the German master Schiller and our leading contemporary verse dramatist, Peter Oswald." Other highlights of Marylebone Theatre's first season include Mark Shanahan's A Sherlock Carol (18 November 2022 to 7 January 2023), concerts by Stile Antico and Jess Gillam, and solo rendition of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land on 11 November 2022 by the acclaimed Ben Okri to mark the 100th anniversary of the poet. Book tickets to A Sherlock Christmas Carol at the Marylebone Theatre in London
