News about As You Like It

Rose Ayling-Ellis announced as patron of Deafinitely Youth Theatre
Rose Ayling-Ellis announced as patron of Deafinitely Youth Theatre
Rose Ayling-Ellis has been announced as patron of Deafinitely Youth Theatre. Deafinitely Theatre is the first deaf launched and deaf led professional theatre company in the UK, producing quality bilingual theatre in British Sign Language and spoken English. Its Youth Theatre, formed in 2010, is an integral part of the organisation and provides an opportunity for those aged 14-25 years, whatever their communication methods, to have access to drama training. The EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing star started her acting journey in 2012 at Definitely Youth Theatre, before moving up to Deafinitely Theatre’s HUB development programme to further develop her training. Rose is currently appearing in Josie Rourke's revival of Shakespeare's As You Like It which has just opened to 4-star reviews at the new West End venue @SohoPlace. The production features two deaf actors (including Ayling-Ellis) and incorporates British Sign Language into the show. Rose Ayling-Ellis says today, “I am delighted to become a Patron of Deafinitely Youth Theatre, a fantastic charity that is so special to me, and supporting the work they do is important to me. DYT, under the direction of Paula Garfield, was my first experience of deaf performing arts and I loved my time there. It provides such as exciting opportunity 14–21-year-olds to take part in drama activities, attend live theatre, meet other deaf young people and learn about getting involved in theatre. Without DYT, so many deaf young people would have limited opportunities to explore or develop their sense of deaf identity. DYT believed in who I was as an actress and who I could be, which is something I want for generations of aspiring deaf actors and theatre makers in the years to come.” Paula Garfield, Artistic Director of Deafinitely Theatre, adds “We are delighted that Rose is now a Patron of our Youth Theatre. Having a role model is so important, especially for young deaf people who may not have had opportunities to meet others like themselves, and Rose continues to be a role model providing inspiration, hope and positivity to the deaf community and beyond, proving that deaf people can achieve big dreams. Rose recognises Deafinitely Youth Theatre’s importance for not only meeting other deaf people, but also learning new skills and learning about the theatre industry from deaf creatives, as we aim to build confidence in a safe, friendly, and accessible environment. It means a lot to us and the future of Deafinitely Youth Theatre that Rose is a Patron, and we look forward to working with her.” Rose Ayling-Ellis is a deaf actress and activist. Her other theatre credits include Mother Courage (Manchester Royal Exchange) and Peter Pan (Birmingham Repertory Theatre). Her television credits include Summer of Rockets, Eastenders as series regular Frankie and in 2021 she won Strictly Come Dancing with partner Giovanni Pernice and the pair won Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment award at the BAFTA TV Awards in 2022. As You Like It at new @sohoplace theatre to provide captions at every performance
As You Like It at new @sohoplace theatre to provide captions at every performance
Josie Rourke's star-studded revival of Shakespeare’s As You Like It at new West End venue @sohoplace has announced that it will be providing captions for every single performance. The decision to caption every show is rare outside of opera performances and non-English speaking productions. As You Like It will feature two deaf actresses in the play - former EastEnders actress and Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis as Celia, and former Casualty star Gabriella Leon as Audrey, who are both making their West End debuts. They are joined by a number of other stars including Leah Harvey (Foundation, The Wonderful World of Dissocia), Alfred Enoch (How To Get Away With Murder), Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) and Martha Plimpton (The Good Wife). @sohoplace also confirmed that Rose Ayling-Ellis and other members of the company will use BSL (British Sign Language) as part of the performance, and that the captions are going to be incorporated into the production to create a fully inclusive experience for all. This includes screens being set up on all four sides of the in-the-round theatre, so wherever the audience sits they will be able to see the screens and the action on stage. Liam O'Dell on the popular blog for deaf people The Limping Chicken welcomed the news, although hoped that the captioning isn't only because of the deaf actresses featured in the show. O'Dell said "Let this initiative from @sohoplace be a demonstration that so many people do not view captions as a ‘distraction’ when it comes to enjoying entertainment – an argument we’ve seen the institutionally audist cinema industry deploy in the past." Given that audiences watching TV are increasingly used to reading captions and subtitles, captioning theatre may become an increasingly common sight in theatres. As You Like It will also run a BSL performance of the show on Thursday 26th January 2023. It is not clear whether @sohoplace will start to caption all shows that run at this new venue. As You Like It will run @sohoplace from 6 December 2022 to 28 January 2023, and feature designs by Rob Jones, lighting by Howard Harrison, sound by John Leonard and music by Michael Bruce. Marvellous, which is currently playing at @sohoplace theatre until 26 November 2022. Book As You Like It tickets at @sohoplace in London

Josie Rourke to direct As You Like It @sohoplace starring Rose Ayling-Ellis, Martha Plimpton, Alfred Enoch, Leah Harvey
A new production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It is coming to new West End venue @sohoplace, directed by Josie Rourke. The production is set to star Leah Harvey (Foundation, The Wonderful World of Dissocia) as Rosalind, Strictly Come Dancing 2021 winner Rose Ayling-Ellis (EastEnders) as Celia making her West End debut, Alfred Enoch (How To Get Away With Murder, Red in the West End) as Orlando and Martha Plimpton (The Good Wife, Sweat in the West End) in the role of Jaques. Further casting will be announced. The play will run @sohoplace from 6 December 2022 to 28 January 2023. Director Josie Rourke said: “Nica has built a beautiful and vibrant new theatre for London and I’m proud to be part of her opening session. When I saw the new auditorium, saying “yes” to directing on that wonderful stage was one of the quickest answers I’ve ever given. I remember well from opening the new Bush Theatre the peculiar struggles and challenges of opening the doors on a new theatre and I’m honoured to be part of this important endeavour. As things feel tough, Nica has doubled down on theatre’s future in the capital and I’m want to support her and her team’s courage by creating a joyful and celebratory show for one of theatre’s most and intimate, welcoming new homes, @sohoplace." Nica Burns, Producer and owner of @sohoplace, said: “Our brilliant director Josie Rourke has brought together an outstanding cast and creative team to realise her vision for one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays. I am a very lucky producer to be working with this wonderful company.” The play's design is by Rob Jones, with lighting by Howard Harrison, sound by John Leonard and music by Michael Bruce. As You Like It comes in to @sohoplace following Marvellous, which is now playing until 26 November 2022. Book As You Like It tickets at @sohoplace in London
