The play stars multi-award winning stage and screen actress Juliet Stevenson, alongside Christopher Colquhoun (The Lion King), Mariah Louca (Best Of Enemies), Daniel Rabin (King Lear), Naomi Wirthner (An Evening At The Talkhouse), Doña Croll (The Heresy of Love), Juliet Garricks (100 Paintings), Preeya Kalidas(Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), John Mackay (Oresteia), Matilda Tucker (The Snow Queen), Sabrina Wu  and Hannah Ledwidge on drums.

The Doctor is written and directed by Robert Icke, and is based on the play Professor Bernhardi by Arthur Schnitzler.

The play has been critically lauded since it opened at the Almeida in August 2019 with Juliet Stevenson in the title role. The play scooped five stars from many of the critics when it premiered at the Almeida, including The Guardian, The Telegraph, Financial Times, and The Sunday Times.

The Doctor runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre until 11 December 2022.

The play’s creative team also includes design by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound and composition by Tom Gibbons and casting by Julia Horan.

In the play, Ruth Wolff (Juliet Stevenson) is a secular Jew who runs a prestigious institute specialising in Alzheimer’s disease. When Ruth prevents a priest from seeing a 14-year-old girl who is dying from a self-administered abortion, the incident goes viral on social media, provoking petitions and TV debates, jeopardising both Ruth’s future, and that of the institute.

Following The Doctor at the Duke of York’s will be brand new pantomime Mother Goose, starring Ian McKellen, John Bishop and Mel Giedroyc, playing at the Duke of York’s from 15 December 2022 to 29 January 2023.
