Rumours have hit the West End that the 2018 musical Sylvia, driven by Zoonation’s Kate Prince, is heading back to the Old Vic.
The Old Vic teased on Twitter today, 30 September 2022, that there would be a show announcement on 6 October. The music they played was from the musical Sylvia, which ran at the Old Vic in 2018 starring Beverley Knight as women’s suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.
Co-written by Zoonation’s Kate Prince and Priya Parmar, with original music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde, Sylvia is a modern musical celebrating the life of Sylvia Pankhurst, her pivotal role in the campaign for women’s rights and the price of the passion and politics that tore her family apart.
Beverley Knight was in the original 2018 production at the Old Vic, starring as Emmeline Pankhurst.
The show was originally co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, with support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and from the Department for Culture Media and Sport.
Kate Prince directed the show in 2018, and alongside Beverley Knight the cast also included Genesis Lynea as Sylvia Pankhurst, Verity Blyth as Adela Pankhurst, Witney White as Christabel Pankhurst, Karl Queensborough as Harry Pankhurst, Delroy Atkinson as Winston Churchill, Carly Bawden as Clementine Churchill & Annie Kenney, John Dagleish as Keir Hardie, Jade Hackett as Lady Jennie Churchill & Edith Garrud, Todd Holdsworth as H. G. Wells & Silvio Corio, Izuka Hoyle as Emily Davison, Tachia Newall as Lloyd George & Lord Cromer, Maria Omakinwa as Ada, Ross Sands as George Bernard Shaw & Richard Pankhurst, Elliotte Williams N’Dure as Flora ‘The General’ Drummond, and Jaye Marshall as Dance Captain.
There’s no news yet on dates, cast or creative team – we’ll have to wait until 6 October!
The big news will be whether Beverley Knight, who recently finished up at The Drifters Girl and Sister Act, is ready for some more Pankhurst action….
