Stage Spy: Shrek The Musical new UK tour planned for 2023

Smash-hit Broadway and West End show Shrek The Musical is to get a brand new UK tour.

The show will be co-directed by Nick Winston and Samuel Holmes, with choreography by Nick Winston, and design by Philip Witcomb. Nick is also director of the new West End production of Bonnie & Clyde The Musical at the Arts Theatre, which is now in previews.

It is believed that producer Mark Goucher is running the tour, for rights owners DreamWorks Theatricals. Mark Goucher is currently producing new show Great British Bake Off The Musical, plus tours of Hairspray and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Shrek The Musical was first staged in the UK in 2011 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and the subsequent UK tour ran from Christmas 2017 to January 2019 directed by Nigel Harman, who starred as Lord Farquaad in the West End show.

Based on the much-loved and Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animations movie, the West End production was directed by Jason Moore and Rob Ashford. The show has book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, music by Jeanine Tesori, and set and costume design by Tim Hatley.

The original Broadway production opened in 2008, where it was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, winning two.
