The Donmar Warehouse theatre in Covent Garden, London has launched its new 2022 season of plays and musicals including A Doll’s House Part 2, The Trials, Silence and The Band’s Visit.
The new season kicks off in June with James Macdonald directing two-time Olivier Award-winner Noma Dumezweni (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) in the European premiere of A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2 by Lucas Hnath. The play runs from 10 June to 6 August 2022. Tickets on sale here.
Fifteen years after Nora Helmer slammed the door on her stifling marriage, she’s back with an urgent request. But first she must face the family she left behind. The creative team for A Doll’s House Part 2 includes Designer Rae Smith, Lighting Designer Azusa Ono and Casting Director Anna Cooper CDG.
Then later in August, Natalie Abrahami directs THE TRIALS, which is a new play by Dawn King with young performers starring alongside leading actors. The production is part of their Donmar LOCAL initiative, identifying the talent of the future and then showcasing them and the issues that matter. Running from 12 August to 27 August 2022, the play’s creative team includes Designer Georgia Lowe, Lighting Designer Jai Morjaria, Associate Director Joseph Hancock, Sustainability Consultants Julie’s Bicycle
In September, the Donmar teams up with Tara Theatre for SILENCE. Directed by Abdul Shayek, this new play by Sonali Bhattacharyya, Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti, Ishy Din and Alexandra Wood marks the 75th anniversary of Partition. Adapted from Kavita Puri’s Partition Voices: Untold British Stories, the play presents a shared history inspired by the remarkable personal testimonies of people who lived through the last days of the British Raj. Silence runs at the Donmar from 1 to 17 September 2022.
Finally, at the end of September the Donmar’s Artistic Director Michael Longhurst directs the European premiere of musical THE BAND’S VISIT. Featuring music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Itamar Moses, this ten-time Tony and Grammy Award winner is a celebration of the way music makes us laugh, cry, and ultimately, brings us together.
Alongside Michael Longhurst, the creative team includes Associate Director Orr Benezra-Segal, Cultural Consultant Dr Lina Khatib and Casting Director Anna Cooper CDG. The Band’s Visit plays from 24 September to 3 December 2022.
In addition to these four new shows, the Donmar will host a free exhibition called WE. BLACK WOMEN. Curated by Donmar Associate Artist Joan Iyiola, it features leading actresses meeting the women who inspire them. The exhibition runs from 6 May 2022 in the Donmar’s foyer space, and features Sheila Atim, Joyclen Buffong, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Noma Dumezweni, Dr Christine Ekechi, Decima Francis MBE, Akua Gyamfi, Naomie Harris, Afua Hirsch, Joan Iyiola, Anaya Kamara, Faith Locken, June Nicol-Dundas, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Susan Wokoma.
