I’m no fan of musical theatre. I’d never even heard of the film, and it was only because I won a couple of tickets that I went to see this just before it transfers to the West End.
But hey, this production turned me around completely. It’s absolutely dazzling, inventive, and seductive. Once I was attuned to the way that EVERY single word was sung I was beguiled. The acting was superb across the energetic cast – there’s no star, it’s a genuine ensemble, a real team performance.
The sets are stunning: moving iron walkways, floating neon, chairs with huge wheels. You’re in late 50s Cherbourg, a town populated by lovelorn mechanics, sassy girls with umbrellas, stripey-topped sailors who pick people up and move them around, and a gorgeous, sozzled chanteuse (as played by the foxy Meow Meow, she’s more ‘Woof Woof’!).
It’s a boy meets girl, gets her up the duff, goes to war, comes back, finds out she’s married someone else kinda story. The songs alone will make you cry – go see!!!
