What's the story of The Prom?
Inspired by true events — most notably, the 2010 controversy in which a Mississippi high school canceled the prom when 18-year-old Constance McMillen planned to take her girlfriend — the musical turns the spotlight on a young lesbian love story.
Emma is dating closeted cheerleader Alyssa and plans to finally go public with their relationship at the prom, but her classmates and friends are trying to stand in their way. When the prom gets canceled and the story makes headlines, a group of veteran Broadway performers come to the rescue. After finding a news article about the controversy, they set out to invade the conservative town and save the day.
