Take a behind the scenes look at the upcoming Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a new play based on the novels by George R. R. Martin coming to the RSC later this month. The play will explore the final years before the events of the novels, revealing a new chapter in Westerosi history.

Announced earlier this year, acclaimed author George R. R. Martin’s fictional world of Westeros is set to make its stage debut at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. The new play, set over a decade before the events of the original Game of Thrones novels and TV series, will focus on a pivotal chapter in the history of the Seven Kingdoms, centred around the Mad King.

Members of the Great Houses – the Targaryens, Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Martells – are all expected to appear in the new stage adaptation, including some familiar characters.

The cast includes Michael Abubakar as Eddard Stark, the role originated by Sean Bean. Also in the cast are Maxim Ays as Ser Jaime Lannister, Marty Breen as Catelyn Stark, Edem-Ita Duke as Oberyn Martell, and Daisy Franks as Cersei Lannister.

The creative team

The new play is based on the series of novels by George R. R. Martin, adapted by Duncan Macmillan.

Directed by Dominic Cooke (Follies, Hello Dolly), the creative team also includes: Puppetry and Movement by Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell, Set Design by Chloe Lamford, Costume Design by Georgia McGuinness, Lighting Design by Jon Clark, and Sound Design by Tom Gibbons.

Also on the creative team are Composer Will Stuart, Fight Director Bethan Clark and Intimacy Director Ingrid Mackinnon.
