Spy hears whispers that George R.R. Martin’s sold-out sensation might have its sights on London’s newest, biggest stage. Nothing confirmed, but the idea is awfully tempting.
Word reaching Spy’s ear this week concerns Game of Thrones: The Mad King, the Duncan Macmillan-penned, Dominic Cooke-directed epic currently laying waste to box office records at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. With its sold-out run closing on 5 September and critics practically begging for an encore (“this sold-out run will not be its last,” reckoned one), the only real question left is: where does a four-hour, 35-strong, dragon-adjacent epic go next?
Spy’s money is on Greenwich. Specifically, the brand-new Troubadour Greenwich Peninsula Theatre, the 3,000-capacity riverside behemoth currently under construction and slated to throw open its doors (or, more fittingly, its castle gates) by the end of the year. With two 1,500-seat auditoriums built expressly to receive large-scale, dynamic productions from across the globe, and a company that already knows a thing or two about staging colossal fantasy spectacle (their Canary Wharf house currently hosts The Hunger Games on Stage, no less), Troubadour’s newest venue reads suspiciously like it was designed with a certain Iron Throne in mind.
Is it confirmed? Absolutely not: Spy stresses this is speculation (though one we’ve heard from a few different quarters), with no announcement from the RSC, HBO, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures or Troubadour themselves. But with a show this expensive needing somewhere suitably epic to land, and a brand-new receiving house opening its doors at exactly the right moment just as the RST run ends, don’t be surprised if winter comes to south-east London sooner than you think.
