Manon in London
Considered to be one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works, Manon is an exploration of inner turmoil and the struggle for survival, set to a score by Jules Massenet and featuring designs by Nicholas Georgiadis.
Originally choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, The Royal Ballet’s former former Director and Principal Choreographer, this ballet offers a nuanced understanding of human psychology.
Bringing to life 18th-century Paris, Manon is considered MacMillan’s best work, notably the gripping depiction of the heroine’s struggle to escape poverty and the impassioned duets of the central couple.
What is Manon about?
Adapted from the 1731 novel L’Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost, Manon explores the seedy underbelly of 18th-century Paris. A native of this hedonistic underworld, Manon is in a struggle for survival, caught between the steadfast man she loves, and the temptations of the dark world she inhabits.
