A trio of stage and screen stars is set to lead Last Dance, a new father-daughter film from acclaimed filmmaker Karim Aïnouz (Firebrand).

The film will star two-time Oscar winner and current Broadway star Adrien Brody (The Brutalist, Fear of 13) and Golden Globe Award winner Rachel Zegler, who recently cemented her status as a West End star with an Olivier Award-winning performance as Eva Perón in Jamie Lloyd’s Evita.

A musical reunion

Joining the lead duo is Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen). In a major coup for the star, Platt will not only co-star but also compose original music for the film, which Zegler is set to perform.

The project marks a swift reunion for Zegler and Platt; the pair recently wowed London audiences in a sold-out concert version of Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years at the London Palladium.

London and Broadway connections

The casting comes at a busy time for all three stars in the UK and US.

Rachel Zegler is currently preparing to take her definitive, Olivier-winning portrayal of Eva Perón in Evita to Broadway, following its smash-hit run in London.

Ben Platt is busy in London this summer, starring in the cult-hit musical Midnight at the Never Get at the Menier Chocolate Factory from 11 July.

For Adrien Brody, this movie represents his first confirmed film role since his historic second Best Actor Oscar win for The Brutalist last year.

Brody is currently starring in Fear of 13 at the James Earl Jones Theatre in New York. Brody was snubbed by the Tony Awards this year, when the nominations were announced earlier this week. Fear of 13 premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in London.

Based on Emily Ziff Griffin’s 2021 New Yorker article, the film is set in 1991. Brody stars as Elliot, a celebrated Broadway composer who takes his daughter Emma (Zegler) on a gay cruise through the Caribbean.

Against a “dazzling, liberating world of music,” the story explores the deepening shadow of the AIDS crisis. As Elliot faces the reality of his illness, he and Emma must confront unspoken truths in a race against time.

Director Karim Aïnouz described the film as a “universal and urgent tale where joy is taken up as resilience.”
