Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) has unveiled a star-studded cast for his upcoming film adaptation of Dave Malloy’s acclaimed a cappella musical, Octet.
The project marks Miranda’s latest move into film direction following his success with tick, tick…BOOM!. Produced under his 5000 Broadway Productions company, the film will bring Dave Malloy’s 2019 Off-Broadway hit to a worldwide audience.
An all-star “support group”
The film features an ensemble of stage and screen heavyweights, led by recent Olivier Award winner Rachel Zegler (Evita) as Velma, and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) as Jessica.
They are joined by a formidable lineup including Jonathan Groff (Merrily We Roll Along) as Henry, Phillipa Soo (Hamilton) as Karly, Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) as Paula, Tramell Tillman (Severance) as Marvin, Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things) as Toby, and Paul-Jordan Jansen (Sweeney Todd) as Ed.
A cappella on film
Octet originally premiered at New York’s Signature Theatre in 2019, and is performed entirely a cappella.
The story centres on eight strangers who meet in a support group to navigate their complex, often destructive relationships with the internet and digital technology.
Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) is writing the screenplay for the film, and is an executive producer. He said in a press statement:
“I am over the moon that Lin-Manuel is turning Octet into a movie. I was gobsmacked by his work on tick, tick…BOOM! and feel honored to have such a beacon of the musical theatre world bring this piece to life.”
While fans await the film’s release, the original Off-Broadway cast recording is available. There are no current details about the UK release of the film.
One of Jonathan Groff’s next projects is in the UK, starring in Shakespeare’s As You Like It at the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon this autumn.
On Sunday (12 April 2026), Rachel Zegler took home the Best Actress in a Musical award at this year’s Olivier Awards 2026, for her knockout performance in Jamie Lloyd’s production of Evita.
