The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme has announced a new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, starring comedian Russell Kane.

Promising to be a radical reimagining of the play, the production is directed by Not Too Tame Artistic Director Jimmy Fairhurst, in a new collaboration between the theatre company and the New Vic.

Award-winning comedian Russell Kane will star as Romeo in the play, marking his first stage role. Further casting is to be announced.

The production reimagines the story with the star-crossed lovers meeting later in life, and will run at the New Vic Theatre from 17 September to 10 October 2026.

“I’ve always been fascinated by Shakespeare, and performing it has long been an ambition of mine. This year I’m throwing myself about as far into the deep end as possible. The New Vic, which was the UK’s first purpose-built theatre in-the-round, is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026.

Its new 2026 season includes the stage premiere of Gladstone Girls written by Oscar-winner Rachel Shenton (The Silent Child), set in the Potteries and exploring the lives of a group of female pottery workers.

The season also includes a revival of its acclaimed 2014 production of Mary Norton’s The Borrowers, directed by New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins.
