Award-winning British director Clint Dyer (Death of England) is set to direct a major West End revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo.
The revival is scheduled for a West End opening this autumn 2026.
The news was confirmed by Dyer in a wide-ranging interview with Baz Bamigboye for Deadline.
Casting is currently underway for the three-hander, which will feature an all-Black cast. There’s no current information about the West End venue or dates for the show.
American Buffalo is about three small-time hustlers attempting to pull off a coin-collection heist. The story doubles as an examination of poverty, friendship, greed, and loyalty. After selling a Buffalo nickel to a customer, Donny – the owner of the Chicago pawnshop in which the play is set – suspects it is worth significantly more and hatches a plan with his young mentee, Bobby, to steal it back. However, the plan shifts when Teach, Donny’s volatile poker buddy, learns of the scheme.

Clint Dyer’s new projects
American Buffalo is just one of a number of new stage projects for Clint Dyer, who is an Associate Artist at the National Theatre and formerly its Deputy Artistic Director.
Clint is back at the National Theatre this year, directing a new production of Tracey Scott Wilson’s newsroom thriller The Story.
The play is heading to the National’s Olivier Theatre from 27 August, starring BAFTA Award-winner Letitia Wright (Black Panther), Ashley Thomas (Hostage), Lorraine Toussaint (Orange is the New Black), and Wilf Scolding (Cabaret).
Clint Dyer’s other work at the National Theatre includes performing in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, co-writing and directing the Death of England series, and directing Othello starring Giles Terera.
Ahead of The Story, Dyer is directing a major London revival of Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, starring Aaron Pierre (Mufasa: The Lion King, Rebel Ridge) as Randle P. McMurphy, Giles Terera (Oh, Mary!, Hamilton) as Dale Harding, and Michelle Gomez (Green Wing, The Flight Attendant) as Nurse Ratched.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is playing at The Old Vic theatre in London from 1 April to 23 May 2026.
Clint’s other stage directing credits include Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical and The Big Life in the West End, and Roy Williams’ Kingston 14 at Theatre Royal Stratford East.
His TV directing credits include the award-winning BBC drama Mr Loverman.

American Buffalo on stage
The West End’s last major production of Mamet’s Tony Award-nominated play was the 2015 production at the Wyndham’s Theatre starring Damian Lewis, John Goodman and Tom Sturridge (read a reviews round-up), and directed by Daniel Evans.
The play originally premiered at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in 1975 starring William H. Macy, Bernard Erhard, and J.J. Johnston.
William H Macy also revived his performance for the Donmar Warehouse production in 2000.
The most recent Broadway production was in 2022, and starred Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss.
