Smash-hit West End musical Moulin Rouge! has hit another milestone, having played for over four years in London.
Last week the musical based on Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning film celebrated its fourth birthday in London, having started previews at the Piccadilly Theatre on 13 November 2021.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is now booking at the Piccadilly Theatre until 23 May 2026.
As if that wasn’t enough, the show has also broken a record at the Piccadilly Theatre, and is officially the West End venue’s longest-running show EVER. Moulin Rouge!, which has played over 1,600 performances, has beaten Grease The Musical, which played at the theatre from July 2007 to April 2011 clocking up over 1,400 performances.
In May, Moulin Rouge! also celebrated the important milestone of welcoming its 10 millionth visitor worldwide.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set in Paris in 1899, in a world of indulgent beauty and unparalleled extravagance, of bohemians and aristocrats, of boulevardiers and reprobates.
Based on the movie by Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge! is directed by Alex Timbers, and has a book by John Logan.
The show is choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, with music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine, set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Peter Hylenski, wig and hair design by David Brian Brown, make-up design by Sarah Cimino, and music production by Matt Stine.
The stars of Moulin Rouge!
Moulin Rouge! recently enjoyed a big cast change, with Karis Anderson (Tina – The Tina Turner Musical) joining the show as Satine, the dazzling star of the Moulin Rouge nightclub, and Alistair Brammer (Miss Saigon) as lovesick American writer Christian.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical also stars Craig Ryder (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) as Harold Zidler, Ben Richards (Emmerdale) as The Duke and new principal Richard Lloyd King (The Book of Mormon) as Toulouse-Lautrec.
The cast also includes Ivan De Freitas (& Juliet) as Santiago, Lindsey Tierney (Hamilton) as Nini, Hannah Jay-Allan (Beautiful – The Carole King Musical) and Helen K Wint (Oklahoma!) alternate in the role of Arabia, Matteo Johnson (Bat Out of Hell) as Baby Doll, Athena Collins (SIX The Musical) as La Chocolat, and Angela Marie Hurst (Motown: The Musical) as Alternate Satine.
