Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera has hit a major new milestone, celebrating its 39th birthday in London.
Now officially in its 40th year in London having opened at His Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit show is the second long-running musical in West End history, only beaten by Les Misérables.
Both Phantom and Les Mis are produced by Cameron Mackintosh, who is enjoying a bumper month of milestones following last night’s 40th anniversary celebrations for Les Misérables.
The Phantom of the Opera is currently booking at His Majesty’s Theatre until 4 October 2026.
Worldwide, The Phantom of the Opera has played to over 160 million people in 58 territories and 205 cities in 21 languages.

The new cast of Phantom
A number of new cast members recently joined the show including Adam Rhys-Charles (From Here to Eternity, Follies) as Raoul, Bradyn Debysingh (My Fair Lady) as Ubaldo Piangi, and Colleen Rose Curran as Alternate Christine Daaé.
They join Dean Chisnall as The Phantom, Lily Kerhoas as Christine Daaé, Joanna Ampil as Carlotta Giudicelli, Adam Linstead as Monsieur André, Martin Ball as Monsieur Firmin, Helen Hobson as Madame Giry and Millie Lyon as Meg Giry.
The ensemble of Phantom includes Michael Baxter, Polly Clarke, Ashley Gilmour, Matt Hayden, Verity Marlow, Inguna Morozova, Skye November, Taylor Pardell, Rachel Spurrell, George Arvidson, Embla Bishop, David Burilin, Leonard Cook, Hywel Dowsell, Connor Ewing, Florence Fowler, James Gant, Emily George, Melanie Gowie, Molly Hall, Eilish Harmon-Beglan, Will Hawksworth, Nicholas Hepher, Mandy Kwan, Tim Morgan, Johnny Randall, Zoë Soleil Vallée, Jasmine Wallis and Victoria Ward.

The Phantom of the Opera boasts music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, and a book by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the novel ‘Le Fantôme de l’Opera’ by Gaston Leroux.
Lloyd Webber’s score includes The Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Masquerade and the iconic title song.
The Phantom of the Opera was originally directed by Harold Prince, and this production is directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn. The creative team also includes Orchestrations by David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Musical Supervision by Simon Lee, Production Design by Maria Björnson with the original Set Design adapted by Matt Kinley, with Associate Costume Design by Jill Parker, Lighting by Andrew Bridge with Associate Lighting Design by Warren Letton, Sound by Mick Potter, and Musical Staging and Choreography by Gillian Lynne, recreated and adapted by Chrissie Cartwright.
Masquerade in New York
A new spin-off Phantom show has recently premiered in New York. Masquerade, which is now booking to 1 February 2026, is an immersive spin-off of The Phantom of the Opera.
Directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Waitress, Pippin), the show brings a new perspective to Lloyd Webber’s much-loved musical. Check out the latest photos of Masquerade.
