Sadler’s Wells East will celebrate its first festive season with the world premiere of Ebony Scrooge, a brand-new hip hop dance theatre production from ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company. Running from Wednesday 26 November 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026, the show marks the venue’s debut Christmas production, rounding off a landmark opening year for the Stratford-based cultural hub.
A contemporary retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebony Scrooge blends hip hop, comedy and physical theatre to tell the story of a formidable fashion mogul who has cancelled Christmas to focus on her glittering career. But when three mysterious visitors interrupt her plans, Ebony is forced to confront her past, present and future – and rediscover the true meaning of happiness and heritage.
Choreographed and directed by Dannielle ‘Rhimes’ Lecointe, the Olivier Award-winning Associate Artistic Director of ZooNation, the production draws on Lecointe’s personal experiences, exploring her Caribbean roots and the evolution of her own relationship with Christmas.
“Ebony Scrooge is a bold reimagining of A Christmas Carol, fusing ZooNation’s signature dance styles and original music inspired by hip hop culture into a vibrant celebration of family, tradition and heritage,” said Lecointe. “More than just another Christmas show, it’s the ultimate Christmas party where everyone’s invited.”
Original music for the production comes from Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante MBE, Co-Artistic Director of Boy Blue and a leading figure in UK hip hop and theatre.
The production is the third new show to be created on site at Sadler’s Wells East, following Our Mighty Groove and Quadrophenia: A Mod Ballet. Rehearsals will take place in the venue’s state-of-the-art Martha Graham Studio.
Sadler’s Wells East, which opened in February 2025, has rapidly established itself as a major force in UK dance, programming over 30 productions in its first year alongside a series of free public events, workshops and performances. With six professional dance studios and a bold artistic vision, it is a cornerstone of the London arts scene’s eastward expansion.
Ebony Scrooge is a family-friendly show suitable for all ages, with several accessible performances scheduled.
