Casting has been announced for the new UK tour of Susan Hill’s thriller The Woman in Black.
The production will star John Mackay (The Doctor, Witness For the Prosecution) as Arthur Kipps and Daniel Burke (The Girl on the Train, Troilus and Cressida – RSC) as The Actor.
The 22 date tour will start at Storyhouse in Chester on 24 September 2025, and also play London’s Alexandra Palace Theatre from 8 to 25 October 2025. Other London dates include Richmond Theatre from 25 to 29 November 2025.

The tour follows the play’s record-breaking 33-year run in the West End, where it played over 13,000 performances at the Fortune Theatre before closing in March 2023. Having captivated over seven million audience members in the UK, the production remains one of the country’s most successful horror plays.
First staged in 1987 in a pub theatre in Scarborough, The Woman in Black soon transferred to London’s Lyric Hammersmith before embarking on a West End run in 1989. Its long-standing popularity has made it a staple of British theatre, praised for its ability to terrify audiences through simple yet highly effective staging.
Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s best-selling novel tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they delve further into his darkest memories the borders between make-believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep.
The Woman in Black is directed by Robin Herford, with design by Michael Holt and lighting design by Kevin Sleep.
